Project Description
Market Assessment of Steel Scrap in Bahrain
- The steel scrap market in the Bahrain was estimated at 150,095 tons in 2019, and dropped to 142,026 tons in 2020 due to COVID led disruptions in scrap source industries as well as collection process. Steel scrap supply is expected to reach 331,093 tons in 2025, mainly driven be the growth in scrap source industries
- In 2020, the key source of steel scrap was construction projects which accounted for 36% of the market, followed by the automotive sector, accounted for 27% in 2020. Other key source industries are Industrial (16%), household (12%). And others, including energy, utility, and shipyards (10%)
- Growing construction activities, and increasing population are the two major drivers of the scrap supply in the country. Cumulative construction spend is expected to reach USD18.4 billion during 2021-2025, while the population will reach 1.7 million by 2025
- Few large and small scrap collection and trading companies collect the steel scrap in Bahrain. These companies collect nonferrous scrap as well. Only two companies, Crown Industries, and Bahrain Scrapmould have the steel scrap shredder. About 56% of the total scrap is collected and exported by top five companies, namely; Crown Industries, Najad Aluminium and Iron Trading, Bahrain Scrapmould, Lilian International Trading, and Afreen Global
- There are only few large scrap suppliers, with existing scrap collection contracts from local source, and hence scrap purchase agreement with these suppliers are critical to ensure continuous supply of the steel scrap for recycling. Different grades of steel scrap are priced differently and are used for different purpose, and hence an additional layer of scrap quality check is required to ensure the correct quality supply
